Gardens, just like your life, can be likened unto a road-trip. There are long, short, smooth, rocky, crooked and straight roads. The same can be said for gardens. Just like your life, a garden can have corners, detours, and crossroads. Definitely the most confusing scenario that you can experience is a crossroad. With four choices to choose from and with limited knowledge on where they will take you, which one do you choose? There are no guarantees. This is one of the most essential aspects you must understand about your life and your garden. Nobody ever said that always choosing the right thing would always lead you to happiness. What was that song – ‘I never promised you a rose garden’? Well, you can be sure of one thing in both your life and your garden and that is ‘The only constant in life and your garden, is that it will change’.
Loving your garden and seeing the perfection of your garden upon completion, is of the utmost importance, but one also needs to have an awareness that there is no guarantee it will stay this way. As in life, hard work and continual care will help maintain its beauty, but there is no guarantee it will bring you happiness. There are many potential problems, such as bugs, disease and weather, over which you have no control. The only thing you can control is how you react to the situation and what decision you will make.
Each decision doesn’t come with a guarantee of success. Hindsight is usually 20/20 and if you had known you were making an erroneous decision, would you still have gone with it? Definitely not, why would you have chosen that particular plant or tree knowing it wasn’t going to work? However, think about what you did learn as a result of that decision? There is always something good that comes from every decision and/or choice we make. Was there a lesson to be learned? We do know that every decision we make brings us more information and it also brought you to where you are today.
Don’t get stuck trying to decide whether your choice is right or wrong. This will cause you to be immobile. Know that there is no right or wrong for your garden. There are only ‘different’ decisions. If you ask four of your friends which choice you should make, you will get four different answers. They are neither right nor wrong – they are only different. You need to keep moving along your own path and sometimes that means having blind faith in yourself and your decision-making. You have all the information you need inside your head, heart and your ‘self’. If you take the time to know yourself and what you want from life and your garden, you can better your chances of making wise decisions, even when there are unknowns involved.
Gardens, and life, can be an exciting, rewarding and fulfilling adventure. Even though the garden in your life can be long, short, smooth, rocky, crooked or straight, don’t let indecision find you sitting on the bench and watching it pass you by. Even though there are no guarantees when it comes to a successful garden, risk it, take that chance, and you will never regret that you did and that is a guarantee!
